Staying protected during Umrah under takaful principles

Staying protected during Umrah under takaful principles

Sharia-compliant Umrah insurance: useful benefits, visa insurance, repatriation, funeral plans and the checks to make before you travel.

For Umrah, Islamic cover should pay for care, repatriation and any cancellation through a takaful fund. The verified sources describe the compulsory insurance attached to the Hajj visa, not the Umrah visa, so each pilgrim must check with their agency.

The lesser pilgrimage carries real risks

Unlike Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of year, including during intense heat or heavy crowds. Fainting, falls, respiratory infections and flight delays are among the incidents that suitable cover needs to anticipate.

What sources confirm about visa insurance

For Hajj, the visa issued through Nusuk includes Tawuniya insurance valid for 75 days in Saudi Arabia. For Umrah, no verified information specifies the cover included, so you need to read the visa conditions and ask the agency for the certificate.

Recommendations from the French authorities

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs brochure on the pilgrimage to Mecca advises insurance covering cancellation, hospital care and repatriation for accident, illness or death. It points out that, without a contract, these high costs fall on the pilgrim and their family.

Why look for a takaful solution

Many pilgrims want their protection to respect the prohibitions on riba, gharar and maysir. Takaful answers this with a fund of gifts managed by an operator under the oversight of a sharia committee, which approves contracts and investments.

How a pilgrims' fund works

Each participant pays a tabarru' into the risk fund, which compensates pilgrims who are hospitalised or repatriated. The operator, paid through a wakala fee, may invest the money only in compliant assets such as sukuk, real estate or screened shares.

Death abroad: burial there or return home

Some families choose burial in Saudi Arabia, others want the body brought home. For Hajj, the Tawuniya cover caps repatriation of remains at 10,000 riyals. The specific needs of the diaspora are covered on our page about repatriating the body.

Diaspora funeral plans

In France, funeral plans that follow Muslim rites sometimes include repatriation, with indicative contributions of 10 to 30 euros a month for a lump sum of up to 7,000 euros, according to Meilleurtaux. A companion's ticket is not always included.

A French takaful offer for funeral costs

Sakina, announced by the broker SAAFI in 2020, offered French tax residents a lump sum of 2,000 to 7,000 euros, paid to a relative or the funeral director, with no medical questionnaire. Whether it was still active in 2026 is unconfirmed.

Telling Umrah apart from Hajj

Hajj must be booked through Nusuk and comes with documented insurance. These reference points do not automatically carry over to Umrah. To compare the two situations, see our page on takaful insurance for Hajj.

The travel agency's role

When buying a package from an agency, the pilgrim should ask for the insurer's name, whether the contract is conventional or takaful, the medical limits and the cancellation benefit, because a package does not necessarily include these protections.

Home countries where takaful is regulated

A pilgrim living in Malaysia or Pakistan can buy cover from locally licensed operators. In Saudi Arabia, Tawuniya carries the compulsory cover linked to the Hajj visa, but a contract from the country of departure is still needed for cancellation.

The fund's surplus after the season

If claims are low, the fund produces a surplus. Under wakala it belongs entirely to participants; under mudaraba it is shared with the operator's shareholders. A short-term contract still has to specify how a one-off pilgrim actually benefits from it.

Arranging your cover before Umrah

  1. Ask the agency or consulate which insurance benefits come with the Umrah visa and for how long they remain valid.
  2. Assess what is missing: cancellation before departure, care during stopovers, repatriation of remains, a companion's ticket.
  3. Question a licensed takaful operator or takaful window about its fatwa, management model and wakala fee.
  4. Review your existing funeral plan: repatriation included or not, limit, destination covered and waiting period.
  5. Carry the insurance certificate, the assistance number and a copy of your passport somewhere easy to reach during the rites.
  6. If you are admitted to hospital, alert the assistance service the same day and keep medical reports and bills for reimbursement.

Frequent mistakes made by pilgrims

What pilgrims ask about Umrah insurance

Does the Umrah visa include insurance?

The sources verified here describe the Tawuniya insurance included in the Hajj visa, not cover for Umrah. You therefore need to ask the agency or check Nusuk for the exact benefits, then add cover if cancellation or care outside Saudi Arabia is not included.

Is there takaful Umrah insurance in France?

No takaful Umrah insurance has been identified on the French market. Pilgrims can combine a conventional travel policy, a funeral plan suited to Muslim rites and, if they live abroad, an offer from a takaful operator licensed in their country.

Do I need repatriation cover if burial on site is acceptable?

If the family accepts burial in Saudi Arabia, repatriation of remains becomes less useful, but medical costs, evacuation and the early return of a relative still need cover. This choice is worth putting in writing and sharing with relatives before departure.

Who confirms that an Umrah contract is compliant?

The operator's sharia committee, made up of recognised scholars, issues the fatwa and monitors investments. In Pakistan, the Takaful Rules 2005 require this committee and an annual sharia audit. AAOIFI provides an international reference with its Sharia Standard No. 26.
